Before you start looking around for the
latest heartburn remedy, you
may want to understand why heartburn occurs. Some of the causes can
be simply avoided through lifestyle change and choices.
If you think you are alone with heartburn,
you are wrong. There is an
estimated 40% of all Americans who have heartburn symptoms at least
one time a month. Heartburn should be a concern due to the fact that
ongoing damage to the esophagus can lead to other health problems.
In general, heartburn is usually caused by
some of the following:
- Eating too large of meals
- Acidic foods
- Anxiety
- Caffeine
Alcohol and tobacco
If you have heartburn you should think of
considering the logical heartburn
remedy first, by avoiding these things. You can also try
some of the following:
- Eat slower and more frequent smaller meals
- Sleep elevated
- Lose weight
- Wait 2-3 hours before going to bed after a
meal
- Avoid peppermint
- Chew some gum or suck on a hard candy
- Put a heating pad or hot water bottle on
your upper right abdomen
Additionally, there are some folk heartburn
remedies that you might
want to try. They mainly involve foods that you can eat or drink to
reduce heartburn symptoms:
Bananas
– they have natural antacids. You may also want to try
ground dried bananas.
Chamomile
– make a tea to drink by adding 1 ¼ cups of water
and 1
teaspoon of licorice root. Simmer for 10 minutes covered. Next, add
2 teaspoons of dried chamomile and continue to simmer for an addition
10 minutes. You will then want to strain out the chamomile before you
drink.
Clove
oil – you can put a few drops of this into a
glass of water.
Sip it slowly.
Ginger
root – especially if you like eating spicy
foods, this is a
great remedy. You can take a teaspoon of fresh ginger root, or it
comes in tablet form.
Licorice
(sold as DGL) – take 500 mg of these chewable tablets. Or
you can open the tablets and put the powder in water to drink. This is
not advised if you have hypertension.
Turmeric
– if you like foods that contain curry, you will like using
this one. If you don't cook with turmeric, you can take it in capsule
form before meals.
Hopefully, you can find a heartburn remedy
that works for you!
