If you suffer from heartburn, there is a
variety of heartburn
medications and remedies available to you. In present day, you have a
wide selection to choose from.
One type of heartburn medication,
known as a proton pump inhibitor, is one of the most potent
over-the-counter drugs. It has been available since September 2003.
Research shows that 60-70% of heartburn
sufferers use over-the-counter
medications for relief. However, they are not intended for long-term
use. Most directions for use indicate that you shouldn't use these
heartburn medications for longer than 2-4 weeks.
If you are
experiencing heartburn more than a couple of times per week, and
relying on over-the-counter medications to get some relief, it's
probably about time to meet with your doctor.
The type of symptoms you have may determine
the type of heartburn
medication you should take. Depending on what other treatments you
have tried, how and when your symptoms occur, and how long they last
for can be influential in the type of medication you should take.
Some over-the-counter medications may not be
appropriate for your
condition, especially if you are taking other medications. It's
essential to talk with your pharmacist about any other medications you
are taking or allergies you have.
Over-the-counter heartburn medications you
have probably seen in your
local pharmacy include Mylanta, Pepto-Bismol, Alka-Seltzer, Maalox,
Tums, and Rolaids. In most places there are cheaper, generic forms
offered. These are all basically antacids that neutralize the stomach
acids that cause heartburn.
If you have occasional heartburn,
antacids are usually a good option. They are good for the onset of
heartburn after a spicy meal, for example. Just make sure that you
follow the package directions and don't take them for longer than two
weeks. If you feel like you are dependent on them, you should talk
with your doctor.
The next type of heartburn medication can be
obtained by prescription
and over-the-counter. Histamine 2 Receptor Antagonists (H2 blockers)
reduce acid production by obstructing signals that tell the stomach to
produce acid.
These heartburn medications not only treat
heartburn,
but also prevent symptoms. Some of the most common H2 medications are
Pepcid-AC, Tagament HB, Axid AR, and Zantac 75. Since October 2003,
Pepcid-AC has been available over-the-counter.
The last type of heartburn medication is
called the Proton Pump
Inhibitor (PPI). PPIs block the actions of cells that propel acid
into the stomach. The PPI can block this action for 10-24 hours.
For
most people, PPIs can eliminate symptoms, even if there is damage
already done to the esophagus. PPIs are for more severe cases of
heartburn and need a prescription. The most well-known PPI
medications are Prisolec, Prevacid, AcipHex, Protonix, and Nexium.
